Have you tried exercising in a pool? I have ankylosing spondylitis (an inflammatory spinal arthritis that makes the spine fuse and it hurts like an heeber-jeeber.) and I can do water aerobics without trouble. I don’t know how to swim, or I’d do that too. The warm water feels great, and since you float there’s no pressure on your joints or back. Most hospitals have a therapy pool. Mine even offers a pool exercise class specifically for back pain sufferers. Some rec centers have similar programs.
I know what you mean about the opiods. My condition is so painful that most drs will give you drugs, but before I was dx’d I had a terrible time even getting ultram. Have you tried a pain specialist? Some suck, of course, but some are great. I had a fantastic one in Kansas, when I lived there. Hey, wouldn’t it rock if you lived near Wichita and I could give you this office’s name? Unlikely, tho, I guess. Even tho I wasn’t dx’d yet they gave me lots of pain medicine and other stuff– they have all sorts of things they can give you with the opiates that help, like muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants (which change the way your brain senses pain). They are generally more comfortable with narcotics, too. I did have to have a urine test when I came in (they didn’t used to do that!) to make sure I was taking them (not selling) and they’d count the pills at appointments, tho, which I understood but was till frustrating. I was on morphine and methadone for a long time. The best pain drs seem to be anesthesiologists, I think.
Good luck and I hope you can get good pain treatment! You can email me by clicking on the avatar if you want.
