Prostitution is often perceived by society as being victimless. According to a recent newspaper article, Veronica’s Voice (VV) of Kansas City, MO, was founded in the year 2000 a few years after a 21-year-old victimized mother of three who was also a friend of the founder was found strangled and dumped in a local park. Her name was Veronica. Since then, this fairly recent organization has spoken to or worked with 8000 women and girls, mostly from the street and nightclub end of the trade. The clientele come from the court systems, referrals, outreach programs, and walk-ins.

Today, Veronica’s Voice also offers a new residential facility, a huge stone mansion called Magdalene Manor, for women and young girls wanting to escape the criminal and dangerous lifestyle of commercialized sex trafficking. Because, this risky trade usually involves major abuse, drug addiction, intimidation, violence, death, and being totally controlled by ruthless pimps, its victims need assistance exiting it. Veronica’s Voice provides the assistive educational and resource services to about 200 victims annually through its midtown SAFE Center, its exact location undisclosed.

Intervention. Through the local court system, Veronica’s Voice offers arrested prostitutes a chance to seek help instead of doing jail time. This chance includes attending a one day workshop addressing all the issues of prostitution and commercial sexual exploitation, and reporting back to the organization for supervised community work. In certain cases, this work might be done at the SAFE Center.

Partners. Includes domestic violence shelters, rescue missions, recovery centers, pregnancy-assistance and women-with-children shelters, religious organizations, medical centers, police, professionals, and related charities.

Outreach. Through influential contacts throughout the community, the staff is building trusting relationships with prostituted women and community leaders and organizations. Staff members also give enlightening presentations to all kinds of mainstream organizations.
